What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a holistic system of medicine that has been practiced in the East for thousands of years.
It is used to maintain general wellbeing and treat a wide range of physical, emotional and mental complaints.

Today, acupuncture is used and recognised more and more in the West as people find this system of medicine can offer an effective treatment for a wide range of conditions. Acupuncture treatment is based on the principles of nature and ones surrounding natural environment and therefore it is a safe treatment to use with no harmful side-effects.

Five Element acupuncture

The focus of Five Element Acupuncture is to improve a person’s overall wellbeing and treat the root cause of symptom's rather than focus upon specific physical symptoms themselves.

Five Element acupuncture is a gentle yet highly effective system of acupuncture and is one of the most ancient forms of acupuncture. Five Element acupuncture treats the whole person as an individual rather than symptoms alone. By understanding a persons symptoms and the lifestyle they lead, the practitioner can begin to understand what the root cause of these symptoms are and where this symptom/disease is coming from. Treating in this way allows for the effects of acupuncture to be longer lasting and also allows for the treatment of several symptoms at the same time with intervention being kept to a minimum.

Five Element acupuncture is based on the theory that there are five elements within nature and within us. Each individual person has a unique connection with all of these elements but a stronger connection with one in particular. In Chinese medicine this is known as ones potential. By treating the person as a whole, Five Element acupuncture helps one to make the most of their potential with individually tailored treatments.

How does it work?

The underlying principle of Acupuncture is that illness and pain occur when the body's qi (pronounced ‘chee’), or vital energy, cannot flow freely. The body's energy paths, known as meridians can become obstructed, in much the same way as damming a river or stream. Chinese Medicine holds at its central philosophy the belief that our health is dependent on the body's vital energy flowing freely without blockage or hindrance.Physical, mental or emotional symptoms are understood to be imbalances of Qi within our bodies.  Factors such as injury/trauma, stress, acute or chronic conditions and emotional upset can all disturb this vital energy and it’s free flowing nature. If this flow of energy becomes blocked or weak, the energy may start to stagnate and so we become susceptible to illness and/or pain.

By inserting very fine, disposable sterile needles into different acupuncture points on the body, an acupuncturist can remove any such blocks, re-balance the levels of qi, detoxify qi and stimulate or calm the flow of qi. The aim is to balance a person’s energy which in turn allows the person’s own natural healing process to begin.

What can Acupuncture help?

Acupuncture can be used to help treat a wide range of conditions that stem from physical, mental or emotional issues and include:

  • Chronic pain, musculoskeletal disorders
  • Depression, anxiety and stress
  • Sleepdisorders
  • Digestive problems
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Menstrual disorders and Menopause
  • High blood pressure and circulatory problems
  • Infertility
  • Pre and post-natal support
  • Skin conditions
  • Respiratory disorders such as asthma
  • Hay fever and other allergies
Acupuncture treats more than just the presenting symptoms a patient comes with. By treating the patient as an individual and rebalancing the qi, acupuncture will also improve a person’s well being and general health. People do not always seek acupuncture treatment due to specific conditions or symptoms. Some people come to acupuncture for preventative treatment and a sense of general well being. Whilst receiving acupuncture for whatever reason, treatment will boost your immune system and your body’s strength helping to prevent further illness in the future.
Acupuncture is safe to use alongside conventional medicine and people of all ages are able to receive treatment.
